Wanping Theater is a comprehensive professional opera theatre located in Shanghai's Xuhui District, exemplifying a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese cultural elements with contemporary architectural and lighting design principles. The theater's distinctive architectural concept draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese folding fan, an iconic element in Chinese opera, manifesting both in its elegant exterior form and sophisticated interior design. Spanning an impressive 29,000 square meters, the facility showcases innovative lighting solutions that enhance both its aesthetic appeal and functional requirements. The building's facade features carefully positioned adjustable in-ground lights and floodlights (10°, 3500K) that emphasize its folding form and curtain wall textures, while the interior spaces employ a combination of adjustable downlights, linear wall washers, and LED strips to create optimal viewing conditions and atmospheric effects. The lighting design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, demonstrates exceptional attention to visual brightness adaptation, spatial luminance distribution, and pedestrian flow considerations. The theater's lighting system incorporates high color rendering luminaires (50°, 3000K) specifically chosen to showcase the vibrant costumes of Chinese opera performances, while the innovative use of vertical lighting throughout the project enhances spatial perception and creates a more immersive theatrical experience. The project, completed between April 2018 and May 2021, represents a significant achievement in architectural lighting design, successfully addressing challenges such as height limitations and multi-functional requirements while maintaining a strong connection to Chinese cultural heritage.
