Wacky Pack Interactive Footwear is an innovative footwear design concept that reimagines traditional shoe closure systems through experimental and unconventional fastening methods. Created by designer Ye Shen, this avant-garde collection explores the fundamental question of how footwear can be secured to the foot while challenging established norms of shoe construction. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Footwear, Shoes and Boots Design category, comprises three distinct models: Bao Bao, featuring a unique shoe-within-shoe-cover concept; O Snap, utilizing interconnecting snap components for customizable closure; and Sticky Fingers, incorporating an all-around zipper system for variable wearing configurations. Crafted from vegetable-tanned leather of varying thicknesses and complemented by custom-selected metal hardware, each piece in the collection demonstrates meticulous attention to construction details and finishing. The design philosophy centers on transforming the mundane act of shoe-tying into an engaging, meaningful interaction between user and product, offering unprecedented levels of personalization in daily footwear. Through intensive prototyping and development, the collection successfully integrates innovative closure mechanisms with traditional shoemaking techniques, including hand-cutting, cementing, sewing, and lasting processes.
