Vladimír Raška
Vladimír Raška was a Czechoslovakian ski jumper and Olympic gold medalist who made a significant impact on the sport during the 1970s. He was born on November 4, 1942, in Harrachov, Czechoslovakia, and began his ski jumping career at a young age. Raška's talent and dedication to the sport quickly became evident, and he soon rose to the top of the ranks in Czechoslovakia. Raška's first major international success came at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, where he won a bronze medal in the individual large hill event. He went on to win gold in the same event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, becoming the first Czechoslovakian to win an Olympic gold medal in ski jumping. Raška also won a silver medal in the team large hill event at the 1972 Olympics. In addition to his Olympic success, Raška won numerous World Championship medals, including gold in the individual large hill event in 1970 and 1974. He was known for his smooth and graceful style, as well as his ability to jump long distances. Raška's success on the ski jumping hill made him a national hero in Czechoslovakia, and he was awarded the Order of the White Lion, the highest honor in the country. After retiring from competition in 1976, Raška remained involved in the sport as a coach and administrator. He passed away on January 19, 2012, at the age of 69.
