Vivian Cherry
Vivian Cherry was not only an accomplished artist but also a dedicated teacher who influenced generations of photographers and artists. Her passion for photography began when she was a teenager, and she went on to study at the Photo League, a progressive organization that promoted photography as a tool for social change. She later became a member of the League and taught there for many years. Cherry's photography work often focused on the urban environment and the people who lived in it. Her images captured the energy and diversity of city life, as well as the struggles and injustices faced by many of its inhabitants. She also experimented with different techniques, such as double exposures and photomontage, to create layered and complex images that challenged traditional notions of representation. In addition to her photography, Cherry was also an accomplished painter and sculptor. Her works in these mediums often explored similar themes as her photography, such as the human condition and social issues. Her paintings and sculptures were characterized by bold colors, dynamic compositions, and a sense of movement and energy. Throughout her career, Cherry received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the arts. She was also a dedicated educator who taught photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City for over 30 years. Her legacy continues to inspire and influence artists and photographers today.
