Vent Stack

A vent stack is a vertical pipe that extends upwards from a plumbing fixture, such as a sink, toilet, or shower, to a vent pipe located in the roof of a building. The purpose of a vent stack is to allow air to enter the pipe system and prevent negative air pressure from forming within the pipes. This in turn prevents water from being siphoned from the fixture, and allows water to flow freely through the pipes. In addition, vent stacks are used to prevent sewer gas from entering the building's interior. Vent stacks are typically constructed from PVC pipe, but can be made of a variety of materials depending on the specific application. The pipe must be of a sufficient diameter so as to not impede the flow of water, and must also be insulated to prevent freezing in cold climates.
