Veloso Residential Compound is an innovative residential development project located in Nacala, a remote city in northern Mozambique, exemplifying advanced modular housing solutions designed to address unique geographical and socioeconomic challenges. The compound, spanning a plot size of 12,500 square meters with 4,200 square meters of built area, comprises 33 residential units ranging from 100 to 120 square meters each, featuring three distinct house designs to accommodate diverse market needs. Architect Samer Chamoun's masterful design approach prioritizes both aesthetics and functionality, incorporating a carefully planned layout that ensures unobstructed sea views for each unit while maintaining resident privacy, resulting in a dynamic, non-repetitive distribution of homes throughout the site. The project's innovative construction methodology employs light steel frame construction as a prefabricated solution, specifically engineered to overcome the logistical challenges of building in a remote location with limited access to construction materials and skilled labor. This groundbreaking approach, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional consideration for community engagement by enabling local, unskilled laborers to participate in the assembly process. The development's completion within a 12-month timeframe, following four months of intensive design and engineering work, showcases the efficiency of its modular system and establishes a new paradigm for residential construction in challenging environments, particularly within the African context.
