Vanke City Growth Hall Sale Centre is a remarkable architectural transformation project that converted a historic state-run electronic tube factory from 1958 into a contemporary multi-functional space in Chengdu, China's eastern suburbs. This innovative adaptive reuse project, spanning 2,970 square meters, exemplifies the delicate balance between preserving industrial heritage and introducing modern design elements. The design concept draws inspiration from the building's original function as an oscilloscope manufacturer, incorporating the metaphor of an energy burst throughout the spatial organization. The central feature is a dramatic staircase that serves as the social heart of the building, connecting various functional areas while facilitating informal gatherings. The project showcases sophisticated material integration, featuring a custom ceramic tile installation depicting local hibiscus mutabilis flowers, and a ground-floor café housed within a layered bamboo box structure that creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. A notable design element includes an artistic installation of 160 cathode-ray television units, paying homage to the building's manufacturing history. The renovation, completed between October 2020 and August 2021, successfully creates a dynamic dialogue between old and new, employing technological materials and lighting that harmoniously blend with the existing industrial architecture. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in adaptive reuse, cultural preservation, and innovative spatial design.
