Urban Skyfarm
Urban Skyfarm is an innovative vertical farming concept designed for dense urban environments, specifically proposed for downtown Seoul, that revolutionizes urban agriculture through its distinctive tree-like architectural form. This groundbreaking design, which earned the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Futuristic Design category, integrates sustainable food production with environmental enhancement capabilities. Standing at 160 meters tall with a total area of 144,450 square meters, the structure employs a biomimetic approach inspired by tree morphology, featuring four distinct components - root, trunk, branch, and leaf - each optimized for different farming conditions. The design utilizes advanced hydroponic systems, incorporating both medium-based and solution-based methods, housed within a lightweight steel structure with open-joint aluminum cladding. The vertical farm's innovative design elevates agricultural spaces to maximize natural sunlight exposure while creating valuable shaded public spaces below. The facility operates as a self-sustaining ecosystem, incorporating photovoltaic panels for energy generation, water filtration systems, and air purification capabilities. The structure houses multiple functions including hydroponic farming areas, a botanical garden, viewing decks, cafeteria, farmers' market, and various environmental facility components. As a response to projected global urbanization challenges, including land shortages and environmental concerns, the Urban Skyfarm represents a forward-thinking solution that combines food production, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. This net-zero energy facility demonstrates how architectural innovation can address critical issues of food security and environmental sustainability in urban contexts, while creating a powerful symbolic presence that represents sustainable development and community well-being.
