Unpolished Light Residence

Unpolished Light Residence is an award-winning residential interior design project completed in Taiwan in October 2022, representing a comprehensive spatial transformation of a 109-square-meter apartment designed to accommodate a family of four through an innovative approach that prioritizes openness, emotional connectivity, and functional efficiency within the constraints of contemporary urban living. Designed by Chia-Chi Yeh, the project exemplifies a human-centered design philosophy where spatial planning revolves around the inhabitants' daily interactions and emotional needs rather than conventional compartmentalized layouts, achieving this through strategic removal of partitions, reconfiguration of the entryway, and repositioning of the kitchen to create an expansive social area that serves as the heart of family life. The design addresses significant architectural challenges, particularly the oppressive feeling created by ceiling height limitations with beams measuring less than 240 centimeters, through ingenious solutions including concealed air conditioning systems integrated into elongated ceiling outlets and sloped ceiling treatments in the children's rooms that visually extend vertical space while adding whimsical character to these private areas. Material selection demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of both aesthetic and functional requirements, incorporating eco-friendly emulsion paint, iron components, transparent glass, marble for the television wall to establish luxurious textural focal points, Italian slab tiles in the kitchen chosen for their ease of maintenance and slip-resistance, and engineered hardwood flooring throughout living areas to provide comfort for the owners' two daughters. The color palette employs a carefully calibrated balance of dark and light tones, featuring iron gray and deep gray as foundational elements complemented by lighter neutral shades, creating visual depth and warmth while maintaining the serene, modern aesthetic that characterizes the understated luxury approach central to the project's identity. Spatial reorganization involved shortening the entryway, recessing both the living room and master bedroom, and implementing a distinctive 45-degree angled corridor that prevents wasted space while creating smoother circulation patterns and maximizing storage opportunities, with compensatory cabinetry installed on both sides of the modified entryway to address storage capacity lost through partition removal. The open-plan social area seamlessly integrates the living room, dining room, open study, and kitchen into a continuous, unobstructed environment that facilitates visual connectivity and spontaneous family interaction while allowing individual family members to occupy comfortable corners suited to their activities, embodying the design philosophy that emotional bonds between inhabitants generate the true warmth of domestic space. Technical execution demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial psychology, employing transparency through glass elements and strategic lighting design to amplify the perception of spaciousness within the objectively limited square footage, while the deliberate mixing of materials, from the refined elegance of marble to the practical durability of engineered wood, creates layered textural experiences that prevent visual monotony in the open layout. The project received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025 within the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, recognizing the work's creativity, ingenuity, and professional execution in addressing contemporary residential design challenges through innovative spatial planning, thoughtful material selection, and human-centered problem-solving that enhances quality of life for its inhabitants. The design's success lies in its ability to transform architectural constraints into design opportunities, converting low ceiling heights into distinctive architectural features, limited square footage into perceived spaciousness through strategic openness, and conventional room divisions into fluid zones that support both togetherness and individual privacy, ultimately creating what the inhabitants describe as a space that perfectly embodies the essence of home through its capacity to extend and enrich the time families spend together in shared areas while maintaining the comfort and functionality of private spaces.
