Umbrella Canteen
Umbrella Canteen is an innovative interior design project that reimagines a 2000-square-meter dining space through a creative architectural intervention inspired by the iconic film Singing in the Rain. This Silver A' Design Award-winning renovation project, designed by Yiming Li with team members Xiang Lv and Chaofei Shi, demonstrates exceptional resourcefulness in transforming an ordinary canteen into an engaging dining environment. The design's distinctive feature lies in its ingenious use of white acrylic plates to modify existing columns into umbrella-shaped structures, each featuring subtle variations in form. The space incorporates a sophisticated environmental control system utilizing hollow low-e glass with water curtains, which serves dual purposes: reflecting sunlight and reducing temperature during summer months while creating a greenhouse effect in winter through controlled water curtain operation. The interior demonstrates thoughtful material selection, combining black and white modular floor tiles to minimize waste, wood-like tiles near plant walls for durability, and strategic placement of green plants along glass curtain walls and windows. The ceiling design integrates both original lighting fixtures and decorative drop lights, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of raindrops. The project, completed between September 2016 and March 2017 in Beijing, exemplifies innovative approaches to commercial interior design through its implementation of modern technologies including 3D printing and modular construction techniques, while maintaining a focus on sustainability and user comfort. The design successfully creates a refreshing harbor for staff relaxation, effectively combining natural elements such as umbrellas, green plants, water features, and natural light to establish a unique dining environment that promotes well-being and social interaction.
