Ukiyoe Restaurant is an innovative Japanese-style conveyor belt sushi establishment located in Chiayi City, Taiwan, that masterfully integrates traditional Japanese architectural elements with local cultural influences. The 297-square-meter space, completed in 2019, exemplifies the design philosophy of handling complexity by simplicity through its thoughtful transformation of an abandoned building into a sophisticated dining venue. The exterior features distinctive wooden louvers that artistically represent the Alishan mountain landscape, while incorporating Japanese shaded aesthetic principles. The restaurant's interior design pays homage to the Edo period through carefully curated Ukiyo-e artwork that stretches throughout the space, creating an immersive cultural experience. The structural renovation employed innovative reinforcement techniques, utilizing H-shaped steel and iron fixings to preserve and strengthen the original building's framework. The design introduces a revolutionary double-track system that reimagines the traditional conveyor belt sushi concept, while the Itabasahi area features an intentionally intimate layout that enhances chef-guest interactions. Sustainable design principles are evident in the selection of materials, including unprocessed cypress wood and rustic iron, demonstrating a commitment to environmental consciousness. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases exceptional spatial planning that seamlessly blends functionality with cultural storytelling, creating a dining environment that honors both Japanese culinary traditions and local heritage.
