Turbine Apartment
Turbine Apartment is an innovative residential interior design project that revolutionizes traditional living space configurations through its distinctive central bookshelf device concept. The 120-square-meter apartment features a unique spatial arrangement inspired by the dynamic form of a turbine, where various functional areas are thoughtfully organized around a cylindrical bookshelf structure that elegantly conceals a structural wall. This architectural solution, developed in Shanghai during 2020, demonstrates exceptional spatial planning by transforming potential structural constraints into design opportunities. The apartment's layout breaks conventional living room paradigms by incorporating multiple specialized zones including a home office, fitness area, family gallery, and viewing area, all interconnected through the central turbine-like element. The design employs sophisticated technical solutions, such as H-shaped heavy pulley tracks for large wooden doors and metal-framed glass doors, alongside customized metal rods for flexible art display systems. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases remarkable attention to detail in its execution, from the carefully crafted on-site carpentry work to the innovative integration of technical elements like concealed wiring systems. The design particularly caters to urban youth families, emphasizing values of freedom, flexibility, and multifunctionality while incorporating contemporary lifestyle elements such as home office capabilities and artistic display spaces. The coherent spatial experience is enhanced through thoughtful lighting design, including track-type spotlights for the family gallery, and the strategic placement of functional areas that maintain spatial openness while providing distinct zones for various activities.
