Transient Matters Crafts And Installation

transient matters Crafts and Installation is an innovative artistic endeavor that reimagines traditional Japanese craftsmanship through contemporary design interventions, comprising four distinct installation pieces that bridge centuries-old techniques with modern aesthetic sensibilities. This groundbreaking project, created by the Japanese design collective 9+1, addresses the critical challenge of preserving traditional crafts while adapting them to contemporary lifestyles through a sophisticated fusion of art, design, and technology. The installation series particularly emphasizes the exploration of Urushi, a natural lacquer derived from tree sap with a history dating back to 5000 BC, incorporating this traditional material in novel applications that showcase its unique properties of heat resistance, antibacterial qualities, and waterproof characteristics. The collection features four primary components: Craftprism, Craftmove, Craftscape, and Craftscape2, each demonstrating different aspects of material innovation and spatial interaction. The installations employ advanced automated lighting systems and utilize a specially developed composite mixture of Urushi lacquer and feroxide, exemplifying the project's commitment to technological integration. This work, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, represents a significant contribution to the dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, offering a thoughtful response to the preservation of cultural heritage through modern reinterpretation. The project's development, which began in September 2017 in Takaoka, Japan, involved extensive collaboration between artists, engineers, visual designers, scientists, and craftsmen, resulting in a series of luxury installations that seamlessly integrate into modern interior environments while maintaining deep connections to traditional Japanese craft heritage.
