Totetsu Training Institute Wayfinding System
Totetsu Training Institute Wayfinding System is an innovative environmental information design solution that exemplifies the integration of functional wayfinding with cultural and industrial heritage. Created in 2021, this sophisticated orientation system employs rail lines as its primary design motif, serving both as a practical navigation tool and a symbolic connection to Japan's railway construction legacy. The system's distinctive feature is its use of continuous linear elements that guide users through the facility, particularly addressing the challenge of accessing rooms in blind areas or through narrow corridors. The design incorporates multiple materials and techniques, including repurposed rail scrap for facility name signs, steel elements, PVC flooring, and floor marking film, creating a cohesive visual language throughout the space. With precise dimensional specifications, including name signs measuring H174 x W2690 millimeters and rail lines of 60mm width, the system demonstrates exceptional attention to technical detail and construction precision. The design's innovative approach to behavioral psychology draws inspiration from natural wayfinding patterns, such as animal tracks and intuitive human movement behaviors, transforming these insights into practical navigation solutions. This project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design category, represents a significant advancement in environmental design by successfully combining functional wayfinding with meaningful cultural elements, creating an environment that not only guides users effectively but also instills a sense of pride and connection to the railway industry heritage.
