Tomori Aid Lantern Kit

Tomori Aid Lantern Kit is an innovative emergency lighting solution that transforms conventional flashlights into ambient lanterns through a thoughtfully designed collapsible cardboard structure. Developed in response to real-world disaster experiences in Japan, this versatile lighting kit represents a significant advancement in sustainable emergency preparedness equipment. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, seamlessly combines practicality with aesthetic appeal, featuring a compact A4-sized form when folded (260mm x 180mm) that expands into a functional lantern (260mm x 170mm x 170mm) when assembled. Created by Japanese designer Yuji Yanagisawa, the kit emerged from direct observations during typhoon-related evacuations, addressing the critical need for reliable, indirect lighting in emergency shelters. The design's ingenuity lies in its dual-purpose functionality, serving both as an essential emergency tool and an attractive contemporary lighting fixture for everyday use. Its construction emphasizes sustainability through the use of cardboard materials, while its adaptable design accommodates various flashlight sizes, ensuring continued utility even if the primary light source fails. The project, developed between November 2019 and February 2021 in Tokyo, exemplifies how thoughtful design can address practical challenges while maintaining aesthetic value, particularly in disaster-prone regions where emergency preparedness is paramount. The kit's innovative approach to emergency lighting earned recognition for its combination of portability, sustainability, and practical application, demonstrating how design solutions can effectively bridge the gap between emergency preparedness and daily functionality.
