Time Flowing In Folding Residence

Time Flowing In Folding Residence

Time Flowing in Folding Residence is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of light, space, and materiality in residential architecture. Created by designer Chih-Hao Kao, this 140-square-meter residence masterfully employs architectural elements to create a dynamic interplay between natural light and structural form. The design's cornerstone is its distinctive main wall, which features generous proportions and deliberately preserved material textures, complete with worn scratches that symbolize the owner's humble life philosophy. The composition incorporates inclined geometries that wind through the space, effectively expanding the visual impact of the living room's TV wall. A sophisticated interplay of light and shadow is achieved through a purposefully designed horizontal grating window in the balcony, creating a mesmerizing pattern of alternating light and dark bars that dance across the floors and walls throughout the day. The project's material palette includes gray tiles arranged in a staggered collage pattern, reminiscent of hand-drawn strokes, while warm wooden elements, including a thoughtfully placed bookcase, soften the overall aesthetic. White varnish plates serve a dual purpose as both design elements and functional surfaces for children's creativity. Drawing inspiration from architectural theorist Louis I. Kahn's principles of material authenticity and spatial soul, the design creates a poetic narrative through its careful consideration of light, shade, and spatial flow. This exceptional work, which was completed in May 2015 in Taipei City, Taiwan, earned recognition as a Bronze A' Design Award winner in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to residential interior design through its innovative use of space, material selection excellence, and sophisticated lighting design.
