Time Capsule Book Design is an innovative approach to book design that transforms the traditional reading experience into an interactive archaeological exploration of graphic design history. Created by designer Yuchen Chen, this unconventional publication measures 220mm x 200mm and consists of 15 independent pages housed within a specialized package box, deliberately crafted to simulate historical artifacts. The design intentionally incorporates various aging techniques, including burned page edges and white powder application, to create the appearance of ancient cultural relics, while the typography is purposefully rendered in minute, nearly invisible text that requires magnification for reading. This unique approach necessitates the use of specialized tools, including dust prevention gloves, brushes, and magnifying glasses, encouraging readers to engage with the content as if they were archaeologists conducting research. The design methodology deliberately breaks from conventional book binding traditions, instead treating each page as an independent artifact with distinct numerical markings. The project, which garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, exemplifies an innovative fusion of content and form, where the physical interaction with the book mirrors its subject matter of graphic design history. This sophisticated approach to publication design demonstrates how the medium itself can become an integral part of the narrative experience, creating a multi-sensory engagement that transforms passive reading into active discovery.
