Thornton Dial

Thornton Dial was an American artist who gained international recognition for his unique and powerful works that challenged the boundaries of conventional art-making. Born in Alabama in 1928, Dial grew up in poverty and worked in a factory for most of his life. It wasn't until he was in his sixties that he began to create art, using found objects, scrap metal, and other materials to construct large-scale sculptures and assemblages. Dial's art was deeply rooted in his personal experiences and the social and political issues of his time. He often addressed themes such as racism, poverty, and inequality in his works, using his art as a means of social commentary and critique. His pieces were complex and multi-layered, incorporating a range of materials and textures to create a sense of depth and richness. Throughout his career, Dial received numerous accolades and awards for his contributions to the art world. His works have been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Despite his success, Dial remained humble and committed to his art, continuing to create works until his death in 2016. His legacy lives on through his powerful and thought-provoking artworks, which continue to inspire and challenge viewers to this day.
