Thomas Morton

Thomas Morton (1579-1647) was an English lawyer, trader, and colonist who played a significant role in the early history of New England. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the founder of the settlement of Merrymount (present-day Quincy, Massachusetts). Morton was known for his unconventional and controversial views, which often put him at odds with the Puritan authorities. Morton believed in a more liberal and tolerant society, where people could enjoy life and have fun without being restricted by religious dogma. He established Merrymount as a place where people could celebrate and enjoy themselves, regardless of their religious beliefs. The settlement became known for its festive and boisterous atmosphere, with music, dancing, and drinking being common activities. However, Morton's views and actions were seen as a threat by the Puritan leaders, who considered him a corrupt and immoral influence on the community. They accused him of promoting licentiousness and idolatry, and in 1628, he was arrested and banished from the colony. Despite his exile, Morton remained a controversial figure and continued to challenge the Puritan authorities. He wrote a book called New English Canaan, which criticized the Puritan way of life and praised the Native Americans for their freedom and independence. The book was considered scandalous and was banned in Massachusetts. Thomas Morton was a complex and fascinating figure, whose ideas and actions challenged the prevailing norms of his time. He was a champion of individual freedom and creativity, and his legacy continues to inspire those who value tolerance and diversity.
