The Wine Barrel Classic Packaging is an innovative packaging design solution that revolutionizes the traditional wine packaging paradigm by reimagining the natural environment of wine - the barrel - in a contemporary retail format. Created by Greek designer Antonia Skaraki and art director Andreas Deskas, this hexagonal cardboard packaging design challenges the conventional notion that premium wine must be contained in glass bottles. The design, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, successfully democratizes wine consumption by transforming it from an exclusive experience into an accessible pleasure. The packaging's distinctive hexagonal form, measuring 17cm in width, 14cm in height, and 20.6cm in depth, incorporates a practical tap system that references the authentic barrel-to-glass serving method found in traditional wine cellars. Constructed from recyclable cardboard with an aluminum bag interior and plastic tap component, the design demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability while maintaining functional efficiency. The innovative serving mechanism, combined with an easy-to-carry handle, makes it particularly suitable as a portable gift option for social gatherings. This packaging solution, developed in Athens since October 2020, represents a significant departure from established wine packaging conventions by creating a new category of wine out of the box that maintains the product's connection to its barrel origins while offering practical benefits for modern consumers.
