The Wheel Pavilion

The Wheel Pavilion is an innovative architectural masterpiece that exemplifies sustainable living and harmonious integration with nature, designed by Chishen Chien. This remarkable structure, spanning 167 square meters across two floors, employs a distinctive circular layout that creates a profound connection between human habitation and the natural environment. The pavilion's design philosophy centers on placing nature at its core, with living spaces thoughtfully arranged around a central organic edible garden, establishing a subordinate relationship between human occupancy and natural elements. The structure incorporates sophisticated passive design elements, including high-performance housing features such as heat-proof and humidity-adaptive exterior walls, heat-insulated rooftops, and strategically placed windows that facilitate natural ventilation. The pavilion's architectural innovation extends to its structural integrity, utilizing an anti-seismic design that effectively disperses seismic forces and wind loads through its circular configuration. Constructed primarily from domestic cedar, the building demonstrates exceptional environmental consciousness by sequestering approximately 33 metric tons of CO2, contributing positively to climate change mitigation. The design seamlessly integrates traditional materials such as adobe bricks and earthen plasters with modern sustainable technologies, creating a comfortable living environment that remains cool in summer and warm in winter. The project, which was honored with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a groundbreaking approach to sustainable architecture that successfully balances aesthetic appeal with ecological responsibility.
