The Visible Secret Illustration Book is an innovative social design project that addresses the complex dynamics of families with children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Special Educational Needs (SEN). Created by designers Bowie Choi and Leo P. H. Chan, this groundbreaking illustration book employs a unique interactive approach through the use of three distinct colored transparent filters - red, green, and blue - each representing different perspectives: the SEN child, their parents, and the general public, respectively. The book measures 270mm in width by 265mm in height and features a distinctive foam-printed cover designed to enhance tactile engagement for ADHD children. This thoughtfully crafted publication serves multiple purposes: it educates the public about the practical challenges faced by SEN families, promotes empathy and understanding through its innovative color-filter storytelling mechanism, and provides valuable insights from occupational therapists, social workers, and parents. The project, which was completed between October 2017 and January 2018, has made a significant impact in promoting social awareness and inclusion, serving over 200 families with more than 7,500 service attendances. The design's exceptional social impact and innovative approach were recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Social Design category, highlighting its contribution to fostering greater societal understanding and acceptance of SEN children and their families. The book's unique combination of storytelling, interactive elements, and therapeutic considerations represents a pioneering approach to addressing complex social issues through design.
