The Union Church
The Union Church is a historically significant architectural masterpiece from 1886, located near the Bund in Shanghai, that has undergone a remarkable transformation into a contemporary music performance venue through innovative lighting design. The structure, which experienced destruction by fire in 2007 and subsequent reconstruction, represents a harmonious blend of historical preservation and modern functionality. The lighting design scheme, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in creating a spiritual atmosphere while meeting performance requirements. The project encompasses 410 square meters and features a sophisticated lighting system that includes a distinctive pendant light serving both illumination and acoustic purposes. The design incorporates recessed lights, candle-shaped fixtures, and in-ground wall washers with precise 15-degree beam angles to accentuate the Gothic architectural elements. A notable technical achievement is the implementation of a custom truss structure that allows for lighting installation without compromising the historical walls, while thick acrylic panels integrated into the pendant lighting system address acoustic requirements for optimal sound reflection. The transformation preserves the church's spiritual essence while introducing contemporary functionality, exemplifying excellence in adaptive reuse through thoughtful lighting design that enhances both the architectural features and the venue's new purpose as a performance space.
