The Tree Aquarium Shopping Mall
The Tree Aquarium Shopping mall is an innovative architectural masterpiece located in Shenzhen's Futian central business district, representing a harmonious fusion of retail space and biophilic design principles. Conceived and brought to life by designers Michael Tsang, Anthony Ho, and David Yu, this remarkable structure spans approximately 53,000 square meters across four levels, distinguished by its unique underwater-themed aesthetic and innovative use of natural elements. The mall's centerpiece is the iconic 'Tree of Light,' an architectural marvel constructed from wood-faced steel frame embedded with computerized LED lighting systems that simulate the ethereal shimmer of underwater illumination. The design's sophisticated integration of water-curtained skylights creates a mesmerizing interplay between natural sunlight and artificial illumination, effectively dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. The mall's distinctive architectural language is characterized by parametrically twisted GRG and wooden contours that create fluid, organic forms reminiscent of underwater currents, while the innovative lighting design transforms the space into an enchanted submarine forest. Completed in 2015, this Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category represents a groundbreaking approach to commercial architecture, offering visitors an immersive escape from urban life through its aquatic-themed environment. The design's success lies in its ability to create a multisensory retail experience where the boundaries between shopping center and artistic installation blur, featuring sophisticated technological integration while maintaining a strong connection to natural elements. The mall's innovative design creates a unique atmosphere where shoppers become part of the aquarium-like environment, interacting with the dynamic scenery while exploring the retail spaces beneath the protective canopy of the central tree structure.
