The Thrilling Quivers Music Center

The Thrilling Quivers Music Center

The Thrilling Quivers Music Center is an innovative interior design project that masterfully integrates traditional Japanese Taiko drumming culture with contemporary spatial design principles. Located in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, this 294-square-meter facility represents a harmonious fusion of cultural heritage and modern functionality, completed in April 2018 by designer Peng-Kai Chen. The center's distinctive entrance features an antique Taiko drum in place of a conventional doorbell, immediately establishing the space's cultural context and preparing visitors for a transformative experience. The interior architecture incorporates sophisticated sound-absorbing materials, with cross-like structures and wooden brick configurations on opposing walls that effectively manage acoustic properties. A notable feature is the reception area's striking installation of 400 drumsticks fashioned into pendant lighting, symbolizing the dedication required for mastering Taiko drumming. The space demonstrates exceptional attention to cultural symbolism through its incorporation of the six-words Tibetan mantra om ma ni bai me hum in circular wall patterns, while extensive mirrors in the performance area serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, enhanced by adjustable bamboo fixtures that accommodate various performance styles. The design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to creating a specialized music education environment that successfully balances aesthetic composition with environmental consciousness, while maintaining strong connections to traditional Japanese cultural elements.
