The Serengeti Bench Seat
The Serengeti Bench Seat is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies modern aesthetics and functional versatility, created by Australian designer David Tate. This sophisticated seating solution, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, masterfully combines practicality with refined aesthetics through its distinctive features and thoughtful construction. The design showcases smart, defined lines softened by the natural warmth of locally sourced Jarrah wood, complemented by black leather hide upholstery. Its most notable characteristic is the integration of side tables at both ends, providing convenient surfaces for users' belongings while maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. The bench's structural integrity is achieved through an internal steel frame and innovative alternating powder-coated steel legs, inspired by the graceful gait of giraffes, which create a self-supporting system where forces work against each other to provide maximum stability. Measuring 2270mm in length, 600mm in width, and 450mm in height, the bench accommodates up to three people and is specifically engineered for high-traffic commercial environments. The design emerged from extensive research into modern workers' active lifestyles and their needs in temporary seating situations, addressing the common challenge of convenient personal item placement in public spaces. The minimalistic seat detailing effectively breaks up the considerable length while defining individual seating spaces, and the contrasting materials - wood, leather, and steel - create a sophisticated interplay of textures and colors. The bench's modular design allows for easy assembly and transportation, while its robust construction ensures durability in commercial settings. Developed throughout 2016 in Perth, Western Australia, this piece represents a thoughtful solution to contemporary seating requirements, combining ergonomic consideration with aesthetic refinement.
