The Season of Gifting Red Packets is an innovative graphic design project that reimagines the traditional Chinese custom of hongbao (red packet) gifting through contemporary design sensibilities while maintaining deep cultural significance. This sophisticated design concept, created by Ruth Chao and awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese customs with modern aesthetic principles. The design draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese philosophical concept that Great things come in pairs, incorporating dual sets of red packets within an elegantly crafted gift box measuring 122mm x 42mm x 207mm. The visual narrative encompasses five distinct graphic sets rendered with elaborate brushstrokes, each symbolizing profound cultural wishes: the flower and fish representing prosperity, tangerine symbolizing luck, house depicting domestic harmony, and the rooster embodying courage and confidence in accordance with the zodiac. The design employs advanced production techniques including UV ink printing, hot stamping, and matt lamination to achieve a sophisticated finish. The packaging experience is thoughtfully choreographed, beginning with a golden plum blossom branch greeting upon opening, leading to the revelation of the dual red packet sets. This design innovation, completed in 2017, successfully addresses the challenge of balancing contemporary appeal with traditional aesthetics while adhering to Chinese customs and beliefs.
