The Retreat Residential House is an award-winning residential architecture project located on the outskirts of Vadodara, India, that exemplifies a harmonious blend of vernacular Indian architectural principles with contemporary design sensibilities. Designed by architects Keta Shah and Varun Shah, this 205-square-meter weekend residence serves as a sanctuary from urban chaos, embodying minimalist aesthetics while maintaining strong connections to its cultural context. The structure features distinctive 18-inch thick load-bearing walls that have been innovatively modulated to create multifunctional surfaces for sitting, sleeping, and storage, demonstrating an intelligent approach to space utilization. The interior design employs a homogeneous grey cement texture throughout, accented with subtle blue and green tones, wood, and metal elements, creating a cohesive visual environment that promotes mental wellbeing. The project's innovative fenestration system, featuring interconnected window panes operated by a single lever mechanism, facilitates optimal cross-ventilation while addressing budgetary constraints. Drawing inspiration from traditional mud houses of the region, the design incorporates sustainable practices and local construction knowledge, manifesting in features such as repurposed elements and custom-built furniture. The fluid living space encompasses living areas, dining, kitchen, and bar areas, while two bedrooms provide private retreating spaces. The vaulted ceiling defines the central bay and creates a visual connection to the surrounding agricultural landscape. This exceptional design earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its outstanding contribution to residential architecture and interior design.
