The Rescape Resort Hotel
The Rescape Resort Hotel is an exemplary architectural and interior design achievement situated on the east coast of Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, embodying a harmonious fusion of contemporary luxury and traditional Japanese craftsmanship. This sophisticated hideaway resort encompasses a centrally positioned administration building surrounded by 41 villa-type guest rooms, each featuring private outdoor pools and terraces, spread across a 30,000-square-meter site stretching 600 meters in length. The resort's design philosophy emphasizes sustainable development through the innovative renovation of six existing structures, including the reception building, seamlessly integrating them with new construction under a unified hotel brand. The interior design showcases a thoughtful incorporation of local artisanal elements, including cushions and foot throws crafted from indigenous indigo-dyed fabrics, artwork created from locally-sourced 'Biro' (Livistona), and lighting fixtures made of traditional Ryukyu glass, all of which contribute to conveying the island's distinctive cultural identity. The architectural approach prioritizes environmental integration through single-story structures that complement the natural landscape, while the material palette combines concrete, tile, wood, Ryukyu limestone, and Indonesian green stones to create a sophisticated yet contextually appropriate aesthetic. The project, completed in May 2019 after a three-year development period, has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in spatial design, cultural sensitivity, and innovative approach to luxury hospitality. The resort offers guests an immersive experience that balances privacy with access to shared amenities, including a restaurant, bar, and wellness programs, while maintaining a deep connection to the surrounding subtropical environment and local cultural heritage.
