The Peach Garden Hostel Homestay is an exemplary architectural renovation project that masterfully transforms a traditional northern Chinese quadrangle into a contemporary homestay accommodation, completed in 2019 in Huairou, Beijing. This 158-square-meter structure, designed by architect Chao Zhou and team, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity in bridging historical preservation with modern functionality. The project's distinctive approach lies in its respectful treatment of the original timber structure while introducing innovative elements through a wood-structured addition that creates a harmonious dialogue between old and new. The renovation strategy carefully preserved the original stone walls while reconstructing the southern wall with modern elements, including strategically placed viewing boxes and skylights. The design's most striking feature is its transparent interface, which creates a seamless connection between interior spaces and the surrounding natural landscape, including views of the Great Wall. The project employs sustainable light construction techniques, achieving high-quality results while maintaining cost efficiency. The multi-functional hall extension, constructed using timber, addresses the spatial limitations of the original 4.2-meter depth while minimizing impact on the historical structure. The design's innovative approach to natural light integration, through extensive glazing and carefully positioned openings, allows guests to experience the changing seasons and landscape from within. This exceptional architectural achievement was recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2020, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to architectural design and cultural preservation.
