THE KOGANEI Koganei Civic Center Environmental Graphic Design

THE KOGANEI Koganei Civic Center Environmental Graphic Design is a sophisticated environmental graphic design project that transforms a multi-functional public facility in Tokyo, Japan, through innovative visual storytelling and wayfinding systems. This comprehensive design solution, created over a six-month period, masterfully integrates the geographical features and cultural identity of Koganei city into the architectural space through carefully crafted visual elements. The design employs a distinctive approach of translating the city's natural elements - parks, rivers, and spring waters - into concrete visual forms within the building, utilizing specialized airbrush techniques on exposed concrete walls with cutting dies. The project encompasses various spaces including large and small halls, lecture rooms, and gallery areas, each featuring thoughtfully integrated graphical elements that reflect the city's character. A notable component of the design is the main hall's stage curtain, which incorporates the city's road network as a design motif, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of spatial and contextual design principles. The project, which earned the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, exemplifies excellence in environmental graphic design through its seamless integration of wayfinding systems with architectural elements, creating a cohesive visual narrative that enhances the user experience while celebrating the local identity and geographical features of Koganei city.
