The Kala Foundation Art Appreciation
The Kala Foundation Art Appreciation is a comprehensive cultural initiative and digital platform designed to bridge the gap between traditional Indian folk art and international audiences, particularly focusing on making diverse Indian painting styles accessible to the global art market. This innovative project encompasses a multifaceted approach through a website, mobile application, exhibition spaces, and editorial publications, specifically highlighting three distinct forms of Indian Folk Paintings: Madhubani from Bihar, Gond from Madhya Pradesh, and Warli from Maharashtra. Developed by designer Palak Bhatt, the project employs a sophisticated abstract design language, featuring a thoughtfully crafted logo where an arrow motif symbolizes global accessibility, enclosed within a square frame representing traditional painting boundaries. The foundation's visual identity utilizes the Tarzana typeface to create an intriguing aesthetic experience, while each painting style is distinguished through a unique color coding system. The platform addresses critical challenges in art accessibility, particularly the language barrier between Indian artists and international markets, through carefully curated digital interfaces and physical exhibitions. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in bridging cultural divides through strategic design implementation. The year-long development process, initiated in December 2016, included extensive research in India and San Francisco, resulting in a comprehensive system that enables art enthusiasts to discover, customize, and purchase authentic Indian folk paintings while simultaneously supporting traditional artists and preserving cultural heritage.
