The Italian Loft Residential House

The Italian Loft Residential House is a masterfully renovated residential space located in Milan's Sempione area, transformed from an old metallurgical plant into a sophisticated 250-square-meter dwelling that exemplifies the evolution of industrial architecture into contemporary living spaces. This innovative residential project, designed by architects Marco Dellatorre, Emanuele Corte, and Vittoria Fiorito, features impressive 5-meter-high ceilings and abundant natural light, demonstrating a unique interpretation of the Italian loft concept that diverges from traditional Anglo-Saxon approaches. The design philosophy carefully preserves the industrial heritage while introducing warmth and intimacy through thoughtful material selection and spatial organization. Rather than relying on physical partitions, the space is artfully divided through the strategic use of colors and materials, creating distinct functional areas within the open plan. The renovation process, completed in 2009, employed traditional brick masonry and iron carpentry, paying homage to the building's industrial past while incorporating contemporary design elements. The project's success lies in its ability to balance openness with intimacy, achieved through collaboration with skilled local artisans in the Milan area. The design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to space utilization and material selection. The project stands as a testament to the possibilities of adaptive reuse, where industrial architecture is transformed into sophisticated living spaces while maintaining its historical character through visible structural elements and thoughtful material choices.
