The Hub Mixed-use Building
The Hub Mixed-use Building is an innovative architectural project located in Al Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that reimagines the traditional Middle Eastern souq concept through a contemporary lens. This Iron A' Design Award-winning structure encompasses a total built-up area of 20,000 square meters, thoughtfully distributed across multiple functions including retail spaces, restaurants, recreational areas, and office facilities. The architectural design draws profound inspiration from traditional Middle Eastern marketplace architecture, featuring narrow corridors, protective canopies, and stone-clad facades adorned with traditional patterns, all reinterpreted through modern design sensibilities. The building's sophisticated spatial organization creates distinct zones with varying privacy levels, effectively addressing cultural considerations specific to Saudi Arabia while maintaining seamless integration between different functional areas. The structure incorporates innovative design elements such as connecting bridges, roof gardens, and a universal canopy that not only provides protection from the harsh climate but also enhances the authentic urban experience. The project demonstrates exceptional efficiency in space utilization, with 10,100 square meters dedicated to rentable indoor and outdoor areas, 2,400 square meters for service areas, and 8,400 square meters allocated to outdoor and landscape spaces. The design successfully overcomes significant challenges related to climate control, cultural requirements, and functional segregation, particularly in managing separate access points for different user groups while maintaining the cohesive feel of a small urban environment under one roof. This architectural achievement, recognized by the A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a harmonious blend of traditional architectural wisdom with contemporary design solutions, creating a vibrant mixed-use space that serves multiple community needs while respecting local cultural values.
