The Greek Campus Public Design
The Greek Campus Public Design is an innovative architectural renovation and public design project completed in Cairo, Egypt, that transformed an abandoned historic campus building into a dynamic startup hub through sustainable and culturally significant design interventions. This comprehensive renovation project, conceived and executed by designers Shosha Kamal and Yasmine Habib between December 2013 and April 2014, exemplifies the intersection of heritage preservation, sustainable design, and contemporary entrepreneurial needs. The project's distinctive approach involved the creative repurposing of abandoned materials, including mannequins, scrap metal, wood, abandoned folders, curtain stripes, broken glass, CD cases, electrical wires, and windows to create a striking 24-meter exhibition wall. The design concept uniquely bridges cultural narratives by depicting Pharaonic figures ascending the Greek-style architecture, symbolizing a metaphorical race toward success and innovation. This cultural fusion not only preserves the building's historic character but also infuses it with renewed vitality appropriate for its modern function as an entrepreneurial space. The project garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to sustainability and cultural preservation. The design extends beyond mere aesthetic considerations, incorporating psychological elements to enhance productivity and creativity among the startup community, exemplified by thoughtful details such as repurposed mannequin hands functioning as mirror holders in washrooms, symbolizing support for young entrepreneurs. This project stands as a testament to the possibility of achieving significant design impact through minimal resource utilization while celebrating human diversity and cultural heritage.
