The Forum Pavilion

The Forum Pavilion is an innovative architectural installation that represents a groundbreaking advancement in digital sheet metal forming technologies and modular construction methodologies. Created by designers Joel Putnam, Justin Nardone, and Joonhaeng Lee, this transformative structure measures 12700mm x 5700mm x 3100mm and serves multiple functions as a stage, screen, instrument, and backdrop for public programming and artistic expressions. The pavilion's distinctive design employs aerospace-grade aluminum throughout its construction, utilizing 66 unique panels that seamlessly integrate both structural support and aesthetic form, all manufactured within a remarkable 12-hour timeframe using advanced digital sheet forming machinery. Drawing inspiration from aerospace and automotive manufacturing techniques, the pavilion challenges traditional architectural conventions by employing a single material to simultaneously fulfill structural, enclosure, and design requirements. The structure's development involved sophisticated parametric modeling through Rhino and Grasshopper software, with particular attention paid to manufacturing constraints and capabilities. First exhibited at the Chicago Architectural Biennial in 2023, this pioneering project earned recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to large-scale, lightweight architectural solutions. The pavilion's modular nature and efficient assembly process, requiring only basic hand tools, demonstrates a new paradigm in architectural construction that emphasizes adaptability, efficiency, and community engagement while fostering social interaction through its multifunctional spaces.
