The Foreign Language Building (YDYO) University Classroom Building

The Foreign Language Building (YDYO) University classroom building is an innovative architectural design that reimagines the traditional concept of vertical classroom structures through its distinctive morphed and entwined spatial organization. This 8000-square-meter educational facility, spanning eight floors with two three-level annexes, challenges conventional academic building archetypes by integrating multiple levels of outdoor spaces throughout its vertical composition. The building's design emerges from a careful response to its steep topographical context, creating a dynamic form that transitions from a splayed configuration at its base to a more elemental organization at its summit. Constructed with reinforced concrete and clad in fiber cement panels, the structure demonstrates sophisticated tectonic solutions derived from its local context. The building's innovative spatial arrangement splits into two programmatic forms at lower levels, with the taller volume housing classroom functions and the lower section containing support spaces. The design incorporates multiple access points into the surrounding landscape, featuring thoughtfully designed external spaces including a paved garden path, entrance canyon, quiet courtyard, and rock climbing area, along with two seasonally adaptable terraces at higher levels. The project, which was completed in 2015, exemplifies excellence in educational architecture through its integration of environmental considerations, functional efficiency, and innovative space planning, earning it the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. The design's success lies in its ability to overcome significant spatial constraints while creating a harmonious balance between indoor and outdoor learning environments, demonstrating how architectural innovation can enhance educational experiences through thoughtful spatial design.
