This 192-square-meter kindergarten renovation project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases a thoughtful integration of spatial design and educational philosophy. The design emphasizes creating an imaginative and nurturing environment through the strategic use of abstract graphic elements, including illusory doors, stairs, and cloud motifs on the ceiling, which are specifically conceived to stimulate children's creativity and cognitive development. The facility's design prioritizes both functionality and safety, incorporating medical-grade non-textured plastic flooring, E0 grade plywood furniture with rounded corners, and antibacterial finishing materials. A notable feature is the spacious reception area and lobby, which provides a welcoming atmosphere and includes 80 pairs of children's shoe cabinets, promoting hygiene and order. The multifunctional teaching kitchen serves as both a culinary learning space and a picture book library, featuring a semicircular countertop design and focused lighting to enhance educational engagement. The project employs sustainable and health-conscious materials, including diatomaceous earth for wall treatments, which offers natural air purification and moisture control properties. Despite budget constraints, the design successfully creates an enriching environment that supports diverse teaching methodologies while maintaining high standards of safety and functionality. The project represents a significant contribution to educational design, particularly in addressing the spatial challenges common in Hong Kong's urban environment while creating an inspiring learning atmosphere for children from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
