The Edge of the Wood Udon Restaurant and Shop is an innovative architectural project in Miki City, Japan, that masterfully reimagines traditional Japanese wooden construction methods while serving as a contemporary dining establishment. Designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto and completed in 2018, this 317-square-meter structure represents a groundbreaking approach to architectural representation of culinary concepts, earning recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. The design philosophy centers on simplifying traditional elements while maintaining their essence, evident in the building's distinctive features such as simplified contour lines, hidden glass frames integrated within thin wooden pillars, and strategically rotated roof and ceiling inclinations. The structure employs traditional Japanese wooden frame construction methods with concrete foundations and Aica Jolypat exterior wall finishing, creating a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. The building's innovative design elements include nearly flat metallic roofing with a minimal 3% inclination, and glass facades on the west and south that appear frameless through clever integration with wooden elements. The interior space is thoughtfully organized around the dining experience, featuring ticket vending machines at the entrance and a carefully planned flow leading to the kitchen counter and seating areas.
