The Courtyard Recreational Space
The Courtyard Recreational Space is an innovative architectural project located in central Bangalore that exemplifies the successful integration of historical preservation and modern design principles. This community-focused venue, completed in 2018, represents a thoughtful amalgamation of two distinct buildings from different eras, unified by a connecting courtyard that serves as its central feature. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, showcases a sophisticated approach to adaptive reuse while maintaining cultural sensitivity. The project encompasses a total site area of 6000 square feet, with the new structure contributing 3500 square feet of built space. The architectural composition features a distinctive rectangular plan with a flat roof, utilizing industrial elements such as corrugated metal walls and a mild steel frame, while the first floor is encased in translucent corrugated polycarbonate sheeting that transforms the building into a luminous beacon at night. The space is purposefully designed to accommodate various cultural activities, including workshops, art performances, social gatherings, and local brand showcases, complemented by an integrated café. The structural design employs exposed black-painted I-beams and deck sheet ceilings, combined with a mixture of concrete and timber flooring, creating an industrial aesthetic that harmonizes with its surroundings. The innovative use of materials, particularly the polycarbonate facade with its adjustable textile drapes, allows for precise control of natural lighting during events while maintaining energy efficiency. This project stands as a testament to sustainable urban development, demonstrating how architectural intervention can preserve historical context while introducing contemporary functionality and aesthetic appeal.
