Tei Residential House
Tei Residential House is an exemplary residential architectural project located in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, designed by architects Masaaki Uemori and Kokutou Uemori, that masterfully integrates contemporary living spaces with the natural hillside environment overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This two-story wooden structure, completed in 2014, encompasses a total floor space of 122.55 square meters and demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to both environmental conditions and lifestyle requirements. The design philosophy centers on creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, particularly evident in its innovative reading deck - a hybrid space that functions as both a book storage area and a contemplative outdoor room, reflecting the region's warm climate similar to Southeast Asia. The house's distinctive features include an elevated first floor designed to address humidity concerns, and a sophisticated Engawa (traditional Japanese veranda) that creates a visual floating effect through the implementation of Horigotasu and Tatami mat elements. The architectural composition carefully considers the surrounding tall trees and optimizes the spectacular ocean views, while maintaining practical functionality for comfortable daily living. The project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, is particularly noteworthy for its thoughtful integration of retirement lifestyle needs with environmental considerations, featuring adaptable partition systems for various uses and climate control. The design successfully balances the desire for a serene, hobby-friendly space with practical living requirements, creating an environment where residents can enjoy activities such as reading or watching sunsets over the Pacific Ocean while maintaining the comfort and functionality of a primary residence.
