Tea House VIP Lounge
Tea House VIP Lounge is an innovative architectural renovation project that masterfully transforms an 80-year-old narrow structure into a sophisticated hospitality space, exemplifying the harmonious fusion of historical preservation and contemporary design sensibilities. Located in Hsinchu city, Taiwan, this 105-square-meter establishment represents a thoughtful approach to adaptive reuse, where the designers, led by Jen-Chuan Chang along with Wei-Ju Teng and Yin-Yu Luo, deliberately preserved the building's original characteristics while introducing modern elements to enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal. The design philosophy centers on the creative use of traditional materials, incorporating concrete flooring, pottery-veined tiles, and preserved brick surfaces to maintain the structure's historical integrity while creating a distinct atmospheric quality. A significant design challenge was addressed through the innovative manipulation of different roof levels, introducing natural light through trans-incline roof bar openings, which not only illuminates the space but also creates dynamic shadow patterns throughout the interior. The project's sustainable approach is evident in its extensive use of reclaimed materials, including old bricks, tiles, window frames, and wooden elements from the original structure, which were thoughtfully repurposed as decorative elements. The spatial organization demonstrates remarkable ingenuity in overcoming the constraints of the narrow structure, with a well-planned circulation system that connects various functional areas while extending visual perspectives to the outdoor environment. The integration of diverse seating arrangements and contemporary furniture pieces transcends traditional spatial conventions, creating an environment that balances Oriental charm with modern comfort. This exceptional design achievement was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to the field of adaptive reuse and interior design.
