Tanjing Sales Center

Tanjing Sales Center is an architecturally significant mixed-use development located in the Taijiang District of Fuzhou City, China, exemplifying a harmonious blend of contemporary design with traditional Chinese cultural elements. The center, completed in October 2019, stands as a remarkable example of contextual architecture that thoughtfully preserves two ancient banyan trees while creating a dynamic series of spaces and inner streets around them. The design employs a Chinese courtyard layout in a U-shaped configuration, forming a semi-enclosed courtyard space that pays homage to the traditional Fuzhou lifestyle concept of under the banyan tree, next to the river. The structure's exterior features locally sourced stone and brick materials, with traditional ceramic tiles crafted using regional techniques that impart a sense of historical continuity to the modern structure. The building's sophisticated design program integrates multiple functions, including green living spaces, a dragon boat museum, art exhibition areas, and entertainment facilities, creating a vibrant community hub. The project, which won the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to its historical context, being situated north of the historic Guangming Port and adjacent to the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys Historical Area. The architectural composition carefully considers scale variations and roof geometries inspired by traditional Fuzhou architecture, while the cross-woven brick façade design allows for natural ventilation and creates an engaging visual rhythm. This innovative approach to urban development successfully addresses the challenges of limited space and strict preservation requirements while creating a meaningful dialogue between contemporary architecture and historical heritage.
