Tangxing No.5 Residential House
Tangxing No.5 Residential House is an exemplary residential architectural project located in Xi'an, China, that masterfully integrates sustainable design principles with traditional Chinese cultural elements. Completed in 2018, this 2,430-square-meter residence stands as a remarkable example of contemporary sustainable interior architecture, distinguished by its innovative use of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) as a primary decorative element. The design, conceived by architect Saiwen Liu, transforms an expansive five-story space into an intimate dwelling through thoughtful spatial organization and natural material selection. The interior features several distinctive elements, including a porous circular window and tea drinking area on the first floor, a Buddhist temple on the second floor illuminated by 726 bamboo-encased light beads, and a third-floor living room crowned by a dramatic 12-meter dome with integrated LED lighting that simulates natural celestial effects. The project's environmental consciousness is evident in its extensive use of sustainable materials, particularly moso bamboo, which offers superior environmental benefits including enhanced soil consolidation and oxygen production compared to traditional building materials. The design successfully addresses the challenge of humanizing large-scale spaces through the implementation of scattered spatial arrangements and planar separators, while maintaining a harmonious balance between luxury and environmental responsibility. This innovative approach to residential design earned the project a Platinum A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional contribution to sustainable residential architecture and its sophisticated interpretation of Chinese cultural elements in a contemporary context.
