Tai Chi Work Desk
Tai Chi Work Desk is an innovative furniture design that harmoniously blends Eastern philosophy with contemporary workplace functionality, created by Chinese designer Lu Yi in collaboration with Ziyao Zhang and Runbo Wang. This ergonomically optimized work desk, measuring 1600mm x 800mm x 710mm, draws its conceptual inspiration from the ancient Chinese principle of Tai Chi, particularly emphasizing the balance between yin and yang elements in its formal composition. The desk's most distinctive feature is its thoughtfully engineered upturned edges on three sides, which serve both aesthetic and practical purposes by preventing tools and implements from falling while maintaining a fluid, sculptural form. The design incorporates soft corner cutting at the front edge for enhanced user comfort, while its overall curved surface characteristics reflect Oriental design sensibilities. Constructed through a combination of CNC-machined metal components and carefully processed beech wood, the desk showcases exceptional craftsmanship, particularly in its challenging curved sections that require both mechanical precision and hand-finishing expertise. The desk is specifically engineered to accommodate the needs of creative professionals, especially designers who frequently use various tools and brushes in their work, with its integrated tool storage solutions seamlessly incorporated into the design. The furniture piece demonstrates high compatibility with both traditional artistic work and modern computer-based tasks, making it particularly versatile for contemporary office environments. This design excellence was recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to workplace furniture design and its successful integration of cultural elements with practical functionality.
