Sustainable Single Family Residence
Sustainable Single Family Residence is an innovative architectural design concept that exemplifies environmentally conscious living spaces within dense urban environments, specifically developed for implementation in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This architectural solution addresses the critical challenges of urban sustainability by incorporating traditional rural spatial elements into a modern residential context, featuring integrated green terraces at multiple levels, semi-outdoor spaces, and water features that create a self-sustaining ecosystem. The design philosophy centers on harmonizing the five human senses through thoughtful integration of natural elements, utilizing a concrete post-lintel structure with wooden accents, and spanning dimensions of 30.48 meters by 27.432 meters with a height of 9.8 meters. The residence's distinctive features include pollution-mitigating green spaces, family-centric living areas, and innovative outdoor interaction zones that foster connection with nature despite the urban setting. This design, which won the Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a significant advancement in sustainable residential architecture by successfully merging traditional Bengali spatial concepts with modern environmental considerations. The project demonstrates exceptional merit in addressing contemporary urban challenges through its incorporation of courtyard spaces, semi-outdoor areas, and strategic placement of green terraces, effectively creating a tranquil sanctuary that shields occupants from urban pollution while promoting physical activity and family interaction. The design's emphasis on self-sustainability and its thoughtful response to local environmental and social contexts establishes a new paradigm for urban residential architecture in densely populated cities.
