SurPlate Marble Platter is an innovative sustainable design solution that transforms leftover marble segments into sophisticated serving platters, exemplifying the intersection of resourceful material utilization and elegant functionality. Created by designers Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, this distinctive tableware piece addresses the prevalent issue of marble waste in Taiwan's interior construction industry, where pre-fixed marble sheets often result in unused segments during customization processes. The design employs advanced water jet CNC cutting technology to craft unique platters from white marble, with each piece deliberately shaped to maximize the natural patterns inherent in the stone segments. The platters, measuring approximately 30 centimeters in diameter, represent a thoughtful approach to sustainable luxury, transforming what would otherwise be discarded material into functional art pieces for the home. This design innovation, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design category, demonstrates exceptional creativity in addressing environmental concerns while maintaining high aesthetic standards. The project, completed in 2018 in Taipei, showcases how digital fabrication technologies can be leveraged to create sustainable solutions in product design.
