Surge Suppressors

Surge suppressors, also known as surge protectors, are devices designed to protect electrical and electronic equipment from power surges. Power surges are sudden and brief increases in voltage that can damage or destroy sensitive electronic devices, such as computers, televisions, and other household appliances. Surge suppressors work by diverting the excess voltage away from the equipment and into the ground. Surge suppressors typically consist of a metal oxide varistor (MOV) and a fuse. The MOV is a semiconductor device that can conduct large amounts of current when the voltage exceeds a certain threshold. The fuse is a safety device that will blow if the current exceeds a certain level, protecting the equipment from damage. There are several types of surge suppressors available, including plug-in models, whole-house models, and industrial models. Plug-in models are the most common and are designed to be plugged into a wall outlet. Whole-house models are installed at the main electrical panel and protect all the electrical devices in the house. Industrial models are designed for use in factories and other industrial settings. It is important to note that surge suppressors do not protect against all types of power problems, such as brownouts, blackouts, and electrical noise. To protect against these types of problems, additional equipment, such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), may be necessary.
