Surge Arresters

Surge arresters, also known as surge protectors or lightning arresters, are devices that protect electrical systems from voltage surges and transient overvoltages. These surges can be caused by lightning strikes, power outages, or other electrical disturbances. Surge arresters work by diverting the excess voltage away from the protected equipment and safely grounding it. There are two main types of surge arresters: spark gap arresters and metal oxide varistor (MOV) arresters. Spark gap arresters use a gap between two electrodes to create a spark that diverts the excess voltage away from the equipment. MOV arresters use a metal oxide material that changes its resistance in response to voltage changes. When the voltage exceeds a certain level, the MOV becomes conductive and diverts the excess voltage away from the equipment. Surge arresters are commonly used in power distribution systems, telecommunications equipment, and electronic devices. They are particularly important in areas with high lightning activity, where voltage surges can cause significant damage to equipment and disrupt power supplies. Proper installation and maintenance of surge arresters is crucial to their effectiveness. Surge arresters should be installed as close as possible to the equipment they are protecting, and should be rated for the voltage and frequency of the system. Regular testing and inspection of surge arresters can help ensure they are functioning properly and provide early warning of any potential issues.
