Super Luminescent Laser Diodes
Super luminescent laser diodes (SLEDs) are semiconductor devices that emit broad-spectrum light with high brightness and coherence. They are similar to traditional laser diodes in that they use a p-n junction to produce light, but they differ in that they lack the optical feedback mechanism that is necessary for lasing. Instead, SLEDs are designed to operate in a regime between lasing and spontaneous emission, where the output is highly directional and has a narrow spectral width, but does not exhibit the coherence properties of a laser. SLEDs are used in a variety of applications, including fiber optic communications, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and sensing. In fiber optic communications, SLEDs are used as broadband sources for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, which allow multiple signals to be transmitted over a single fiber by using different wavelengths of light. In OCT, SLEDs are used as the light source to generate high-resolution images of biological tissues, which can be used for medical diagnosis and research. In sensing, SLEDs are used to measure physical parameters such as temperature, pressure, and strain by detecting changes in the spectral characteristics of the emitted light. SLEDs have several advantages over other light sources, including high brightness, low noise, and low power consumption. They are also compact and can be integrated with other optical components, making them ideal for use in portable and handheld devices. However, SLEDs have some limitations, including a limited output power and a relatively short lifetime compared to traditional laser diodes. In summary, super luminescent laser diodes are semiconductor devices that emit broad-spectrum light with high brightness and coherence. They are used in a variety of applications, including fiber optic communications, OCT, and sensing. SLEDs have several advantages over other light sources, but also have some limitations.
